A helpful framework when things don't go your way

The real struggle with a daily newsletter (or anything that you set out to do consistently) is that there will be times where things don't go your way, which will also suck up all your capacity and energy to get them done.

Today is one of those days for me.

This newsletter will still go out today, but not after some mental rewiring I've had to slap on myself in order to get things going.

My hope is that some of these frameworks will be applicable for you whenever things aren't going your way:

  1. Build some slack into your day. I knew today would be rough for me since last night, so I got up early to have some quiet time to at least start my morning at my own pace before all the necessities come crashing down later on. I find that mornings are easier to control before the chaos of the day takes over, though it really isn't important when you do this, but that you do it in order to allow yourself some breathing room.
  2. Embrace the chaos. I say this a lot here so this is a timely reminder for me, if anything: life does not care, and things just happen. Instead of hoping for moments of peace where you can graciously accomplish what you set out to do, sometimes things just need to get done in an ugly fashion. I'm proud that I'm still sending out this email, but it'll probably come at an expense of something else later on. Maybe I'll have to sacrifice my workout, or do less work later, or just not have any time to rest. The truth is, I don't know. But admitting I don't know and allowing myself to just flow through the chaos is freeing in a way that's better than trying to cling on to control of everything.
  3. If you really cannot keep up with what you're committed to, allow yourself the time off. My default is to push through and deal with things as they come. I'm really good at persevering (and unnecessarily suffering in the process) through tough times but I understand that your baseline may not be tuned the same way. Give up on your consistency if you really feel like the world is crashing in on you today.**

**It's not my position to say, but most of the time, the world isn't crashing in on you and we tend to over catastrophize our own suffering, so pushing through is a reminder to myself that things aren't as bad as it seems.

Today’s email is going out much later than I’d like - I usually prefer to send them before noon, but I’m at my parents’ place for Boxing Day dinner later, so I’m writing this at my desk in my old room. Better late than never, as they say. I’m getting close to 100 consecutive daily emails now, and if there’s one lesson this streak has taught me, it’s that starting late might not be perfect, but it’s still better than not starting at all. I’m also juggling a busy and heavy period with work and...

The other day, I got a call from yet another unknown number. I panicked for a moment thinking back to the time my old workplace called me while I was shopping for groceries. But I wasn’t that busy this time, so I picked up out of curiosity, An automated voice answered me: “Hello, I’m from JobStreet, and your resume has been approved…” 🤮 I hung up immediately, but I wish I had let it ramble on because it would have given me great email fodder to write more stories. Still, scams like these make...
